Website….check! Now what?

What separates a website with a bunch of traffic from one that just sits?  Sometimes it’s the site itself, but often times, it’s purely a lack of marketing and branding.  Well designed and implemented sites can suffer lack of traffic simply because all the money was spent on the site, and nothing left to tell people about the site.

Your URL (Uniform Resource Locater) – or the www.YourCompanyNameHere.com can be the key difference between a bunch of hits and a bunch of misses.  A particularly long URL can be just as dangerous as one that’s so short it doesn’t tell anything about the site or the business it’s for.  Recently, a whole slew of new URL suffixes – or Top Level Domains – have become available.  Used to, you were pretty much stuck with .com (private companies), .net (primarily for tech companies), .gov (government only), .org (primarily non-profit) and .edu (schools and universities).  Now, there are so many suffixes to choose from that you really can dial in what your business does right into the URL.  A problem with having additional suffixes can also be that you may register a domain that is very similar to another website and only the suffix tells you apart.  if you are seeking building materials, you may want to go to www.lowes.com, but if you accidentally type in www.lowes.net, it’s an entirely different site.

Again, this is where your marketing mix comes into play with your website.  You need to get your name out there!!!!  Once you have your site bought and built, stick your URL on anything you can.  Business cards, stationary, brochures, sales literature, company vehicles, pencils, shirts – you name it!  The more people see your URL, the greater the chance that they will remember it when it comes time to find you or your product.

Do you want to build a website?

No, that’s not the song from Frozen….

It’s the marketing question that every business that isn’t already on the web should ask.  Even those businesses that area already on the web, should ask, “Is our website working to build the business, or is it just an electronic business card?”  Your website should be so much more.

Not every business needs a high end E-commerce site with multiple layers of secure-server design.  If your business model is service oriented instead of product oriented, it may be difficult to envision a site that is much more than a digital business card, and that’s where your designer should come in.  If the intent of your website is to drive traffic to your brick-and-mortar store, then consider adding a promotional offer on your site to engage the customer and allow it to be tracked to see that it’s working.  A promo code that changes regularly can be a great tool to track effectiveness and seasonal trends.
